End of the Year Information

Hi all,
Important end of the year information is included below:
The Debs that attended the trip had a fabulous time and did a great job representing themselves, our group and our school.  Thank you to all the parents that made the trip possible for their daughters.
Don’t forget our last Chicken Express fund raiser of the year is next Tuesday, April 10th from 5 to 9.  You may drive thru, take out or eat in.  You don’t need any fliers; just come have dinner and help the Debs raise funds.  We need two parents to help out for each shift (5 to 7 and 7 to 9).  If you are free, please let Ms. T. know at pjtomlin@garlandisd.net
The officer reveal will be Friday, April 13th at approximately 7:30 pm in the Deb gym if you would like to come see the outgoing officers do their strut for the last time and see the new officers perform together for the first time.
Senior Debs and parents, remember the booster club scholarship applications are due Wednesday, April 18th.
If you know any incoming 8th graders, Share Night was rescheduled for Monday, April 30th from 6 to 8 pm in the Competition Gym.
The Deb end of the year banquet is Friday, May 18th at 7:00 at the Hyatt in front of Naaman Forest HS.  Parents and dates are invited.  The tickets are $20 and will be on sale soon.  Seniors, this is a great way to spend any money you have left in your personal account.
If you are interesting in attending another school’s spring show, the dates are as follows:
South Garland – April 5, 6, 7
Naaman Forest – April 6 and 7
North Garland – April 6 and 7
Lakeview and Rowlett – April 14 (one night only)
Sachse – April 21 (one night only)

Upcoming Work Day Information

Hi all, I just wanted to remind you about our first upcoming work day. It will be Saturday, February 11th from 12 to 5. The Debs will also be practicing that day so when you drop your daughter off, stay and help for a while. It’s a great way to get involved and meet new people. Don’t worry if you can’t draw or paint, there are plenty of other jobs to do. Also, if you haven’t turned in your Spring Show work day form, I have reattached it. Feel free to print it off and return it or email me your date or let me know on Saturday. See you soon!

P.S. remember, if you reply to this email you are not replying to Ms. T. My email address is pjtomlin@garlandisd.net Thanks!

Reminders

Hi all,
Happy New Year to everyone!  I hope your 2012 is off to a great start!  The Debs have been very busy the last two weeks and we are excited to start showing you what we’ve been working on!  Below are some dates and reminders to keep us all in the know the next few weeks.
1.  This is the most important thing to remember – The girls have to stay on top of their grades this six weeks.  If they become ineligible this six weeks, they cannot participate in spring show or go on the trip.  (Remember, the trip payments are non refundable.)  The girls have done a great job keeping their grades up, but we really need to make sure they remain eligible this six weeks.
2.  If your daughter would like to do a solo at the contest on February 25th, the entry fee is $75.  I will send in our list of solists on January 25th so please let me know before then.
3.  Look for a separate email at the end of this week regarding two fund raisers for our last trip payment or if your daughter would just like to get some money in her account to defray activity fees, camp costs for next year, etc.  Remember, if you are a sophomore or junior, your personal account money does roll over for next year.
4.  Also, look for a separate email regarding spring show parent volunteers.  Our show is such a success because of our parents and we could not have such a wonderful show without your help.
5.  The third trip payment of $250 is due next Wednesday, January 25th.
6.  We will be performing our last two contest routines Tuesday, February 7th.  One at the girls’ game and one at the boys’ game.
7.  Join us for contest showoffs on Monday, February 13th at 7:00 in the GHS boys’ gym.  Admission is free and you are going to love what you see!!
8.  We won’t know the schedule of when we perform at contest until the week of, but plan to come support your daughter on Saturday, Feb. 25th at Poteet High School in Mesquite.
9.  We now have a wonderful new way to keep you organized and up to date!  Thank you to Michael and Rebecca Baker for our wonderful gift of Charms.  This is an online office assistant that allows you, the parent, to access our drill team information or your daughter’s personal account.  I have attached a sheet to get you started and logged in.  If your daughter has money in her personal account, you will have access to the information and her balance.
10.  If you are interested in holding a board position next year, please let Cathy Ledbetter know.  Almost all of our board members are senior parents so we will have many vacancies.  Please don’t be shy to nominate yourself or if you know another parent that you feel will do a good job, nominate him or her and we’ll contact them to see if they are interested.
11.  Finally, remember, if you respond to this email, you are not responding to Ms. T.  My email is pjtomlin@garlandisd.net
Thanks!
Ms. T.

What’s happening in 2012

Happy New Year everyone!  The Debs are already hard at work on their spring activities; the team has many upcoming events such as competition, Spring Show, and a trip to Disneyland!  We are going to have a very fun and fast-paced semester.  Check the calendar section on our website for upcoming events through April.

Spring Show ads are due on January 10th.  Please help support your Debs and buy an ad for the Spring Show program!  If you need an ad form or a digital version of the template, send an e-mail to DashingDebs1@gmail.com.  We appreciate your generosity and support of these amazing young ladies!

Our Booster Club meeting for January will take place on Monday the 9th at 7pm in the GHS Library.  Come join us and learn how you can help out this spring.  Our awesome parents and families are what help make the Debs such a successful team.

Playoffs- Round 2

Garland represented well on Friday: the halftime, the game, the sidelines and the fans ALL rocked! Your Owls football team defeated Berkner 24-7, advancing to round two of the playoffs versus Mesquite HS. The fabulous Garland Owls are headed to Cowboys Stadium this week, Friday 11/18 and the game begins at 6pm. Advance tickets are $6 for students and $8 for adults, $10 at the game. Parking is 10 dollars. No online sales this week. Come on out to see the beautiful Dashing Debs perform Olympia on the Cowboys’ star!

G-town is Playoff Bound

We are excited to give you the details regarding our first playoff game!  Garland High School will be playing Berkner on Friday, November 11th at 7:30 at Williams Stadium!
If you are interested in buying tickets for the game, they go on sale Monday, November 7th at 8:00 am.  Adult pre-sale tickets are $6 and student pre-sale tickets are $4.  At the gate, the cost is $7 for everyone.
The Debs will be performing next week to ”Olympia”.
As most of you probably know, Olympia is the traditional playoff routine for the Debs. Here is a little bit of history behind the routine.  The Debs are the only drill team in Garland that have a traditional playoff routine (for obvious reasons) ;).
“Olympia”, our playoff routine, was learned at camp in the summer of 1995 and was performed during the regular football season. The crowd loved it so much, we brought it back for playoffs. The crowd still loved it so much, they requested to see it again during the 1996 football season. We agreed that if we made the playoffs, we would bring it back again and thus it became a tradition. In the past 17 years, we have been to the playoffs 15 times and have taken “Olympia” on the road with us every time. During the 1999 football season when the Garland Owls became state champs, we performed “Olympia” six times. Our final performance that year was at the Houston Astrodome where 39,102 people came out to watch. That game was the sixth highest attended game in all of Texas state history. People all over the state of Texas and beyond have had the chance to see our fabulous routine and we are very proud to show it off. At school it has come to be known as the “circle routine” and as our Owls progress, people start asking me if we are going to bring it back another year. Last year, one of our teachers at the game told the girls they needed to take half-time very seriously because it was a beautiful routine that always gave her chills and had a reputation of greatness for almost as long as these girls had been alive. I think that is a great way to summarize it!
A note from Coach Jordan – “We played Berkner in the first round at Williams in 2008. The last playoff game before that at Williams was in 1968, so this does not happen too often! Start making plans, because it will be a great atmosphere and a lot of fun!”
Hope to see everyone there next Friday night!
Ms. T.
